Navigating the World of Gel Polish
As a nail tech, the world of gel polish opens up a realm of possibilities for stunning manicures beyond what regular nail polish has to offer.
Structured gel manicures have become a game-changer in the nail industry, offering clients a durable mani that looks great for weeks at a time.
In this comprehensive guide, I'll walk you through the intricate process of applying gel polish and structured gel, so that you too can achieve flawless results with Breeze Polish that will leave your clients coming back for more!
Understanding Gel Polish: The Basics
Before we dive into the application process, it's important to understand the basics of gel polish.
Gel polishes are either a true gel or a hybrid gel. True gel consists of UV gel which creates flawless colors. Hybrid gel is a mix between UV gel and nail polish.
Although gel comes in similar bottles to regular nail polish, it behaves quite differently- for one, it cures and hardens under a UV or LED lamp. This curing process creates a resilient finish that lasts longer than a traditional nail polish mani.
Gel polish comes in an array of colors and finishes, from creamy pastels to vibrant neons and shimmering metallics.
Additionally, it provides a stronger structure and a more even coverage than regular polish, giving your clients that coveted salon-quality look that last for weeks.
The Nail Canvas: Preparing Natural Nails
Prep is the most crucial part of the process- it will set the stage for an excellent application and contributes to the overall longevity of the manicure.
Nail Analysis
Begin with a careful examination of your client's natural nails. Take note of any irregularities such as ridges, splits, damage, etc.
Are you dealing with a queen who has always take care of every details of her nails or are you dealing with a horrendous case of Edward Scissor Hands?
Understanding the condition of the nails allows you to tailor your approach, address specific concerns, and ensure a successful application.
Cuticle Care
The canvas for your masterpiece extends beyond the nail bed and all the way to the eponychium! The eponychium is located underneath the proximal fold and it produces cuticle.
Cuticle is dead skin tissues residue that is white in color and can be found on the nail plate. Gently push back the eponychium using a cuticle pusher while exercising care to avoid causing discomfort to your client.
Lifting the eponychium off the nail plate will help expose all the cuticle that needs to be removed prior to nail application.
Nail Shaping
Nail shaping is an art in and of itself. Consult with your client to determine their preferred nail shape—whether it's square, round, almond, stiletto, etc.
Use a high-quality nail file to sculpt the nails to your client's desired shape- symmetry and balance are key here. I personally love using a 100/180 grit to get the perfect shape for my clients!
Nail Plate Prep
Carefully filing the natural nail surface will create an ideal foundation for gel polish. Filing the nail plate helps to strip the natural nail of any unwanted oils and helps provide a textured surface for the gel to hold to.
Cleansing
Cleanliness is key. Use a nail cleanser or 90% rubbing alcohol to thoroughly cleanse the nails. Make sure to remove any oil or debris.
This step is foundational for promoting optimal adhesion and ensuring the gel polish adheres seamlessly to the natural nail.
Base Coat
The base coat acts as the adhesive bridge, ensuring a strong connection between the natural nail and the subsequent layers of hard gel, multi flex gel and gel polish.
You’ll start by applying a thin, even layer of base gel to each nail.
After your base coat has cured, you can either apply a hard gel or multi-flex gel to provide more structure to your client’s nails. A properly structured gel provides needed support and the strength to grow healthy and long.
Now this is where the magic happens!
Select the desired gel polish color, and with the finesse of an artist, apply a thin and precise layer to each nail.
For darker more pigmented colors, thinner coats is key to prevent shrinkage and wrinkling. Use a thin liner brush to push the gel polish as close to the sidewalls and cuticle.
We want them to look fresh even longer with little to no grow out!
Curing
The curing process is where the gel polish transforms from a liquid masterpiece to a solid work of art.
Place the client's nails under a UV or LED lamp, ensuring that each layer cures according to the manufacturer's recommendations.
The curing time may vary based on the lamp's wattage and the gel polish brand, so consult the product instructions for optimal results.
Iterative Brilliance
Repeat the color application and curing process until the desired level of opacity is achieved. Each layer adds depth and vibrancy to the color, contributing to the overall aesthetic of the manicure.
The Final Masterpiece: Top Coat
No masterpiece is complete without its finishing touch. The top coat is the final touch to your mani and it makes a world of a difference. It enhances the shine, seals the color, and provides an additional layer of protection.
Apply the top coat with the same precision as the previous layers, ensuring an even and thorough coverage.
Curing the top coat under the lamp is the last step before the big reveal.
Navigating Challenges: Troubleshooting Gel Polish Application
Even the most skilled artists encounter challenges. As a nail technician, being well-versed in troubleshooting is essential for delivering consistently exceptional results.
Precision Over Perfection: Avoiding Flooded Cuticles
Flooded cuticles are the worst, am I right?
To help combat this, make sure your client’s fingers are downward and they aren’t moving or texting.
Some clients have more curved nails and you’ll notice you have to do one finger at a time followed by a cure to prevent flooding.
Thin is In: Achieving Durability Through Thin Layers
While it might be tempting to apply thick layers for quicker results, resist the urge.
Thin, even layers contribute to the longevity of the manicure.
Thick layers, on the other hand, are more prone to chipping and peeling.
Precision in application is your secret weapon for delivering gel polish manicures that stand the test of time.
The Art of Curing: Ensuring Proper Hardening
Proper curing is non-negotiable. Ensure that your UV or LED lamp is in optimal working condition, as insufficient curing can result in soft or sticky gel polish.
Follow the manufacturer's recommended curing times for each layer, taking into account the wattage of your lamp.
Bless your Nails : Cuticle Oil Application
As you complete the gel polish application, elevate the experience for your client with a luxurious final touch—cuticle oil.
Applying cuticle oil nourishes the cuticles, hydrates the surrounding skin, and adds a lustrous sheen to the finished manicure.
Beyond Application: Aftercare and Maintenance
A gel polish masterpiece doesn't conclude with the final cure. Equipping your clients with aftercare guidance ensures they enjoy the full potential of their manicure.
The Power of Education: Providing Aftercare Instructions
Teach your clients with knowledge on how to care for their gel polish manicure.
Advise them to avoid activities that may cause trauma to the nails, such as excessive typing or using their nails as tools.
Educate them on the potential impact of harsh chemicals, teach them to wear gloves when washing the dishes and to use cuticle oil at least 2x a day!
Regular Maintenance: Nurturing the Artwork
Encourage clients to book for regular maintenance appointments, typically every two to three weeks.
During these appointments assess the condition of the gel polish, address any signs of lifting or chipping. Regular appointments helps to provide a safety net for their nails and encourages nail health.
The Gentle Farewell: Safe Gel Polish Removal
When the time comes to bid farewell to the gel polish masterpiece, prioritize a gentle and safe removal process. Emphasize the importance of professional removal to prevent clients from resorting to potentially harmful DIY methods.
This guide covers the intricate artistry of gel polish application, from meticulous preparation to troubleshooting and aftercare.
As a dedicated nail technician, mastering this craft requires a blend of precision, creativity, and a commitment to ongoing learning.
